Blood Donation Application

Personal Project

Overview

In giving blood I have noticed that the blood donation process is not as efficient as it could be. Recently I decided to give a couple of the mobile apps a try to see how the process might change. I realized a number of inefficiencies with the application and how it pairs with the physical experience of blood donation.

Research

This convinced me to investigate further. I first conducted research regarding two of the major applications and completed a competitive analysis with Adobe InDesign. I then reached out to users through interviews for their thoughts on the blood donation process. Particular concerns included the 15 minute questionnaire before every visit and the disorganized feel of managing appointments. An interesting idea was also posed about the gamification of blood donation to incentivize giving more frequently.

Ideation

From there I moved through sketching, diagramming in Microsoft Visio and paper prototyping of my own blood donation application. After the feature set was defined and flow refined, the high fidelity prototype was built in Adobe XD. Many of my initial decisions were driven by pros and cons of the applications I had analyzed as well as expectations of the users interviewed.

Insights

User testing was employed throughout the ideation stage with each iteration slowly moving towards the best solution. Particular insights included emotional impacts of color choices, features with the best engagement and places where the process felt a bit clumsy. The users were very direct with their feedback, which is exactly what I had hoped for as a designer.

Solution

I incorporated many of the findings in updates to my application. I feel that the final prototype is an excellent solution to assist in the blood donation process without being overly complex. Please feel free to test it out!
